This means the entire vehicle is permanently split into two main sections—a front compartment (housing the engine and operator cab) and a rear section (carrying the transmission and rear axle)—connected at the very center by a massive, robust pivot pin and hydraulic steering cylinders.

Think of it as the machine's "waist." This joint allows the two halves of the LHD to articulate, or bend, horizontally from the centerline.
