The traction motor is one of the most important components of an underground battery locomotive. It converts electrical energy from the battery system into mechanical power to move the locomotive and its load. When selecting or replacing a motor, buyers must consider not only its rated power, but also its voltage, speed, operating duty, mounting dimensions and connection arrangement.
The ZBQ-8 is a flameproof DC traction motor designed for use with compatible 5-ton mining battery locomotives, including the CTY(L)-5T GB model indicated in its technical drawing. This article introduces its main specifications, construction and key points to check before ordering.

The S2–60 min rating means that the motor is specified for short-time operation with a 60-minute operating period under the stated rating conditions. The motor uses series excitation, a configuration commonly associated with DC traction applications because of its starting characteristics. However, the performance of a complete locomotive cannot be determined by the motor alone. Gear ratio, wheel diameter, mechanical transmission and vehicle condition must also be considered.
The ZBQ-8 assembly drawing shows a robust construction consisting of several serviceable mechanical and electrical parts. Its main components include the stator, brush holder assembly, front and rear end covers, terminals, terminal box cover, inspection-window cover and bearing-related parts.
The drawing identifies two rolling bearings: a 6207 bearing and an NU207 bearing. These bearings support the rotating assembly and should be checked during maintenance for unusual noise, excessive vibration, overheating or wear.
The brush holder assembly is another important maintenance point in a DC traction motor. Carbon brushes and their contact surfaces should be inspected regularly. Worn brushes, poor contact or contamination may affect current transmission and motor operation.
The terminal area includes terminal nuts, insulating washers, elastic sealing washers and cable clamping components. When servicing the motor, these parts should be kept clean, correctly installed and securely tightened. Any damaged insulation or sealing part should be replaced with a component that matches the original technical requirements.

The drawing indicates an overall motor length of approximately 485 mm, an overall height of 410 mm and a maximum mounting width of 320 mm. The illustrated center distance between the mounting points is 260 mm.
These dimensions provide an initial reference, but they are not sufficient by themselves to confirm direct replacement. Before purchasing a ZBQ-8 motor, buyers should also verify:

Keyway dimensions
Mounting-hole size and position
Shaft center height
Coupling or gearbox interface
Cable outlet and terminal position
Available installation space
Existing locomotive and motor models
Even when two motors have the same voltage and rated power, differences in their shaft, mounting feet or transmission connection may prevent direct installation.
Routine inspection can help identify developing problems before they cause unplanned locomotive downtime. Operators should pay attention to bearing noise, motor vibration, brush wear, terminal tightness, cable condition and signs of overheating.
The exterior and inspection areas should be kept free from excessive dust, water and foreign material. The sealing components, covers and fasteners should be checked whenever the motor is opened for maintenance.
Because the ZBQ-8 is described as a flameproof mining motor, inspection, installation and repair should be carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with the safety requirements applicable at the mine. Flameproof features and mating surfaces should not be modified without technical authorization.

To receive the correct motor or a suitable replacement, provide the supplier with the locomotive model, existing motor model, nameplate photo, rated voltage, required quantity and destination country. Photos of the installed motor, shaft connection, mounting feet and cable outlet are also helpful.
